Gastroschisis

Gastroschisis

Gastroschisis is a birth defect where there is a hole in the abdominal wall beside the umblical cord. The baby's intestines, and sometimes other organs, are found outside of the baby's body, exiting through the hole.

The cause of gastroschisis is unknown,

Gastroschisis is labeled as simple or complicated. This is based on how inflamed the bowel and/or organs are that have moved through the opening. With simple gastroschisis, only the bowel makes its way out of the abdominal opening.

The treatment for gastroschisis is surgery. A surgeon will put the bowel back into the abdomen and close the defect, if possible. If the abdominal cavity is too small, a mesh sack is stitched around the borders of the defect and coverage is provided.
